O que é necessário para alugar um carro em Venice?

Alugar um carro em Venice é bastante conveniente, mas podem existir alguns requisitos específicos, especialmente para condutores estrangeiros.

  • Forma de Identificação: A valid physical Italy national photo ID is required for all local renters.
  • Carta de condução: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical Italian driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1 year; for some offers and higher‑class vehicles it must have been held for at least 2 years. All national driving licenses in the Roman alphabet or in English are accepted. Licenses not in the Roman alphabet or English must be accompanied by an official English translation or an International Driving Permit.

Notas: For some vehicle groups (e.g., Citroen DS7 CROSSBACK or similar, Nuova C5 X Hybrid or similar, Jeep Compass or similar, Audi Q5 or similar, Q5 S-Tronic or similar), your driving license and ID document must be issued by the same country.

  • Cartões aceitos: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required where credit cards are listed. Commonly accepted credit cards include Visa and MasterCard; some offers also accept AMEX, Diners Club, Discover and JCB. Some rentals additionally accept debit cards (often Visa, MasterCard, sometimes UnionPay and others) for payment or deposit; in other cases only credit cards are allowed and no debit cards are accepted.
  • Requisitos de idade: Most offers allow drivers roughly between 18–21 years minimum and 74–99 years maximum, depending on the specific rental. A typical common range is about 19–80. Young driver fees apply when the main or additional driver is below about 25 (exact ranges vary by offer, commonly 18–24 or 21–24). When a young driver fee applies, the charge per day follows the offer’s stated reference, for example: $14.00, $16.48, $17.49, $22.16, $23.33, $27.99, $29.93, $42.69 per day (or corresponding weekly/monthly caps where stated). Some offers also charge an additional fee for older drivers (e.g., from 75 or 76 years), using the reference provided in that offer.
  • Carta de condução: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1 year; for some offers it must have been held for at least 2 years. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP). Please note the IDP is only a translation and must be presented together with the original licence; photocopies or scans are not accepted or
    • EU/EEA driving license, which is valid for car rental across the EU/EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom or
    • In some offers, a full driver's license issued in Italy.
All national licenses in the Roman alphabet or in English are accepted; all others must be accompanied by an official English translation or an International Driving Permit.

Venice Car Rental Essentials

Critical answers for American travelers renting cars in and around Venice, Italy

Can I actually drive into Venice? Where do I park?
No—you cannot drive into Venice's historic center. The city is car-free, built on islands connected by bridges and canals. You must park at Tronchetto parking garage (€25-35/day) or Piazzale Roma, or stay in Mestre on the mainland and take the train/bus. Many rental offices are located at Marco Polo Airport or in Mestre, not in Venice proper. Plan accordingly.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for Italy?
Yes, legally required. Italian law mandates an IDP alongside your valid US driver's license for all foreign drivers. Police can fine you up to €300 if stopped without one. Get your IDP from AAA or AATA before leaving the US (costs ~$20, same-day service). Some rental companies may not ask for it, but that won't protect you from police enforcement.
Will I get hit with young or senior driver fees?
Drivers under 25 typically pay €15-25/day extra, and many companies restrict certain car classes to ages 25+. Some companies also charge senior driver fees for those over 70-75, or may refuse rental entirely. Minimum age is usually 21, but you'll need a credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit (€500-1,500 hold).
How do Italian highway tolls work? Are they expensive?
Italian autostrade use distance-based tolls—grab a ticket at entry, pay at exit. A typical 2-3 hour drive costs €10-20. Pay with credit card at 'Carte' lanes or cash at manned booths. Avoid the 'Telepass' lanes unless you have the electronic device. The A4 highway connecting Venice to Milan and other cities is the main route you'll likely use.
What's a ZTL zone, and will I get fined?
ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) are restricted traffic zones in Italian city centers—cameras automatically fine unauthorized drivers €50-100+ per violation. Venice's Mestre area and nearby towns like Padua have ZTLs. Look for circular signs with 'ZTL' and a red circle. GPS sometimes routes you through them—ignore it. These fines arrive by mail months later, so stay alert.
