O que é necessário para alugar um carro em Mallorca?

Alugar um carro em Mallorca é bastante conveniente, mas podem existir alguns requisitos específicos, especialmente para condutores estrangeiros.

  • Forma de Identificação: A valid physical national photo ID is required (Chile renters in Chile; Spain renters in Spain).
  • Carta de condução: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical national driving license with no major endorsements. The license must typically be held for at least 1–2 years; some offers require 2 years and a few require up to 4 years, where shorter holding periods may incur a new/young driver fee.

Notas: Some locations accept Spanish digital driving licenses via the official DGT App. In Spain, young drivers may be charged additional daily fees; some locations also apply a new driver fee if the license has been held for less than 4 years.

  • Cartões aceitos: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Accepted credit cards include Visa and Master, with many locations also accepting AMEX, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and in some cases UnionPay. Some stations also accept debit cards (usually Visa or Master) as deposit cards, subject to local conditions.
  • Requisitos de idade: Most offers allow driving between approximately 18–25 (minimum) and 70–99 (maximum), with the most common ranges being 21–80 or 21–75. Several offers restrict rentals to 25+ or 26+. Young driver surcharges commonly apply when the driver is between about 18–26 (or up to 25) and can range roughly from EUR 5–32 per day (or capped totals such as EUR 55–300), or around USD 10–20 per day in some locations. In a few offers, senior drivers (typically 75+ or 75–100) may also pay a daily fee. Notes indicate that luxury/premium vehicles can have stricter age limits and that some locations charge additional “new driver” fees when the license has been held for less than four years.
  • Carta de condução: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving license with no major endorsements. The license must typically be held for at least 1–2 years; some offers require 2 years and a few require 4 years, while others accept any full license regardless of holding time. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP)
    • Original South Korea Driving License (English version with English translation on the back)
    • EU/EEA Driving License (valid across the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the UK)
    • Full driver’s license issued in Spain
    • Original driving licence + Spain sworn translation (where specified).

Notas: IDP is only a translation and must be presented together with the original driving license; photocopies or scans are not accepted. Some Spanish locations accept Spanish digital licenses via the official DGT App for eligible foreign renters. Young and senior drivers may incur additional daily surcharges, and some locations apply a surcharge if the license has been held less than 4 years.

Commonly accepted schemes are Visa and Master; many locations also accept AMEX, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and UnionPay. Some offers additionally accept debit cards (usually Visa or Master, sometimes UnionPay) as deposit cards. In a few cases, proof of Collision/Theft and Third Party Liability coverage from a card issuer or insurer must be provided in printed form.

Mallorca Car Rental Guide

Essential driving tips and rental answers for your self-drive adventure on Spain's Mediterranean island

Can I use my US driver's license to rent a car in Mallorca, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your US driver's license is valid in Spain, but you'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a translation document. The IDP costs about $20 and can be obtained from AAA offices. Renters must be at least 21 years old, and drivers under 25 pay a young driver surcharge of approximately €25-35 per day. An IDP is mandatory at rental counters—police rarely check it, but rental companies always do.
Are there toll roads on Mallorca, and how do I pay for them?
Mallorca has no toll roads—all island highways (including the MA-1 and MA-13) are free. However, if you take the ferry to mainland Spain or drive through France, the AP-7 Mediterranean highway charges tolls (roughly €30-50 depending on distance). Rentals typically have an electronic toll device (viaT) pre-installed, with charges added to your final bill plus a small admin fee. Ask your rental company to confirm before you cross the mainland.
How scary are the mountain roads in Serra de Tramuntana? I'm planning to drive from Valldemossa to Sa Calobra.
The MA-1081 from Valldemossa to Sa Calobra is dramatic but manageable if you're cautious. The road has 12 hairpin turns and drops 700 meters—it's narrower than typical US roads and has guardrails that would be considered insufficient by American standards. Drive slowly on the inside of turns (wider view), avoid peak hours (10am-2pm) when tour buses dominate, and never attempt the road in heavy rain. Rental compact cars handle it fine; avoid large SUVs as they're harder to maneuver on tight switchbacks.
What's the parking situation in Palma's old town? Can I just pull up to my hotel?
Palma's old town (Casco Antiguo) has very limited traffic—most streets are pedestrianized or restricted (ZTL zones). Your hotel may not have its own parking, and street parking requires the blue zone system (roughly €1-2/hour, max 2 hours, 9am-9pm). The closest public garage to the cathedral is Aparcamiento de la Plaza de la Reina, charging about €20-25/day. Book a hotel with parking included, or plan to use public transit into the old town and park your car at your accommodation outside the center.
What fuel type do rental cars in Mallorca use, and should I get the full-to-full or prepaid tank?
Over 80% of rental cars in Spain run on diesel (gasóleo), not gasoline. Check your rental agreement carefully—if you have a gasoline car, you'll use 95-octane unleaded (sin plomo 95). The standard policy is full-to-full: you receive a full tank and must return it full to avoid refueling charges at above-market rates (€1.80-2.20/liter vs. €1.40-1.60 at pumps). Always photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and return. Gas stations are plentiful near towns but can be sparse in mountain areas—don't run below a quarter tank when exploring Serra de Tramuntana.
Is it safe to drive in Mallorca in summer? Any special traffic rules I should know?
Summer brings heavy tourist traffic—July and August see twice the population and frequent traffic jams on coastal roads. Spain drives on the right with left-hand drive vehicles. Key rules: roundabouts (rotondas) give priority to cars already inside, not entering; right turns on red are prohibited unless specifically signed; and speed cameras are common in urban areas (50 km/h limit) and on highways (120 km/h). Download an offline GPS map (Google Maps works offline) to navigate without data. Avoid driving in Palma during 2-5pm in August—heat and traffic make it miserable.
